Apps For Ghent 2018 - Ghent in Space.

On Saturday the 17th of March, the 8th edition of our hackathon Apps For Ghent was finally here! "Open data is not rocket science" said Dries de Roeck, but space-data comes pretty close. This became clear in our preparatory events. The public observatory Armand Pien extensively presented their available data sets and on the 5th of March we had our Copernicus workshop, where professionals taught us how to analyze the Copernicus sentinel data. The attendees of these data dives had a big advantage in using the space data.

10 different teams came to the E-building in Ghent on the 17th of March to develop their space-themed applications. Each team received 5 hours to develop/design their app and pitch it in front of a full auditorium. The teams battled for one (or more) of the 5 prizes. These prizes were handed out by an 11-member jury. This year we also had the honour of welcoming the CoderDojo jury. At CoderDojo, girls and boys aged between 7 and 18 get the opportunity to put their first steps into coding and programming. After a strict assessment, these youngsters also chose their winner.

If you are interested in more information about the winners and the applications in general, please visit our Apps For Ghent website (only in dutch).

We would like to thank all teams, speakers, jury members and attendees for making this event a big success. We are looking forward to welcoming you next year, at the 9th edition of Apps For Ghent.
